Incandescent is a projection installation originally created for the 2023 Morat Light Festival in Switzerland. The three-minute rotoscoped animation depicts a child encountering an orb of light—observing, chasing, and marveling at its mystery. The work explores our fascination with the unknown and the sense of wonder it evokes.
Each frame was hand-drawn using a unique rotoscoping process: video footage was projected onto a blackboard, traced in chalk, and photographed—over 3,000 drawings in total. The result blends lifelike motion with the expressive imperfections of handmade animation.
Reimagined for the Lightwave Festival at Port Arthur, Tasmania, Incandescent was adapted to reflect themes of resilience and the enduring light of childhood within dark histories. Designed to respond to each site’s architecture, the work animates façades with subtle interactions—figures emerging from corners or stepping through doorways—best suited to buildings with a balance of flat surfaces and defined features.
